Everything you need to welcome cooler temperatures in style.

12 Fall Wardrobe Essentials for 2017

Back in April, I posted my 12 spring wardrobe essentials. Today, I’m coming full circle with that shopping guide, and talking about fall wardrobe essentials! I know for many of us, October can take a toll on our bank accounts. There’s the Texas State Fair, Halloween, and plenty of scary movies to go see. Oh, and suddenly all the spare $5 bills in our wallets go towards pumpkin spice lattes! This time of year is fun, but before you drop $60 on a Halloween costume you’ll only wear once, make sure your closet is in check with these 12 Fall Wardrobe Essentials for 2017! 😀

1. Chunky Knit Cardigan

If you read 3 ways to wear a chunky knit cardigan, it’s no surprise that a chunky knit cardigan is the first item on my fall wardrobe essentials! Fall is the perfect time to play-up your layering game, and a chunky knit cardigan is ideal for layering over button down shirts, sweaters, and tees! They’re literally perfect for chilly temps and rainy days, and I even like to wear mine over pajamas on the weekend! If you ask me, there’s nothing quite as wonderful as bundling up in a chunky knit cardigan, and sipping on some coffee in the morning. This oversized cardigan from Target has cute buttons, plus pockets, and is only $30. 🙂

2. Cognac Belt

Whenever I want a fall outfit to look more polished, I’ll half tuck my shirt or sweater into my jeans. Not only does it hold loose pants up, but it’ll also break up the look and visually lengthen the legs. Get a cognac belt so it’ll go with your cognac booties! This gold-buckle belt from Macy’s is 1.5 inches wide, and very affordable right now (only $17 with discount code STYLE)!

3. Lightweight Crewneck Sweater

Everyone knows that fall is sweater-weather! Make sure your closet is stocked with a lightweight crewneck sweater, in whatever color you like! It’ll definitely come in handy for layering under jackets.

Make sure you get a thin sweater, versus a thick cable knit sweater, to prevent burning up in the early fall months! I also recommend a crewneck (or scoopneck) sweater, over a v-neck sweater, because they look better layered over collared shirts, such as chambray shirts or plaid button downs! It’s also much easier to style with long pendant necklaces. 🙂

4. Cognac Ankle Booties

A pair of cognac ankle booties will become your go-to, everyday shoe during the fall season. You know that time of year when it’s finally cold enough not to wear sandals, but not exactly cold enough for tall boots? Yeah.. break out the ankle booties! I recommend cognac over black, because they go so well with warm fall colors like taupe, mustard yellow, burgundy, and burnt orange.

Go for a pair with a low, chunky heel so you’ll be comfortable in them all day long. This pair of cognac ankle booties from Target is both cute and versatile! They’d look great with a denim mini skirt, boyfriend jeans, or your favorite skinny jeans!

5. Utility Vest

Ease into fall by layering a utility vest over long-sleeve tees and sweaters. They make outfits look less basic, and exude a relaxed vibe that’s fitting for school or the weekend. You can usually find one in an army green color, which will act as a neutral so you can wear it with everything! If you ask me, this utility vest from Charlotte Russe has the best pocket and drawstring details for the price.

6. Riding Boots

Of course, I had to include riding boots in my fall wardrobe essentials. As the temperatures drop, you’ll wear them everyday with ponchos, blazers, and vests! They’re also perfect for those fun fall activities – like pumpkin-patches, apple-picking, and haunted houses – where you’re often trekking through dirt! Although you can get a solid black pair or brown pair, I really like the versatility of these two-tone riding boots with gold hardware. They’d match with both black and brown handbags (and belts!), so you’ll always look cute and coordinated! 🙂

7. Plaid Scarf

Although there are TONS of prints and patterns in the world, none of them scream fall more than plaid! From larger prints to smaller prints, you’re sure to find a plaid scarf that fits your fancy. My favorite way to wear them is over loose sweaters, but they also look great with casual shift dresses and boots! Whenever I visit Target this time of year, there’s always so many cute scarves to choose from. I’m loving all their $20 options linked below, and this one is my favorite!

8. Neutral-Colored Blazer

On days when you want to look elevated and sophisticated, go for a basic, neutral-colored blazer. It’s another layering piece that looks extra cute with a tee, scarf, and jeans. For everyday wear, I recommend getting one made from a stretchy, pique knit material, like this beautiful brown blazer from Old Navy. It’s a little more casual and less tight than a traditional, professional blazer, so you’ll feel more comfortable in it!

9. Plaid Buttondown Shirt

Layer some print underneath jackets and cardigans with a plaid buttondown shirt. You can also wear them under vests, and roll up the sleeves for a casual, preppy look. They also look great tied around the waist. Like a chambray shirt, it’s important to get one that will last over time. This plaid button down shirt from American Eagle has an ideal fit, and comes in 12 different colorways!

10. Felt Hat

Fall is the season to swap your straw panama hat for a felt hat! A neutral-colored felt hat is a must-have on days when you don’t care about your hair. It’s the one accessory that’ll tie an outfit together, and add that finishing touch before you head out the door!

Floppy hats are nice, but I’m a bigger fan of a rancher style felt hat, like this black hat from H&M. To me, they’re less obnoxious and more practical than floppy hats!

See how I styled a felt hat for fall here, and here.

11. Chambray Shirt

A chambray shirt exudes a rustic, western vibe that complements fall plaids perfectly! Tweed, corduroy, velvet, and leather are also common materials for fall bottoms, and a chambray shirt is useful to wear with all of them. Thanks to the relaxed, casual feel of a chambray shirt, it can make a velvet mini skirt less fancy, and leather pants less sexy in an instant. Basically, a chambray shirt can help turn a lot of “nighttime” bottoms into pieces you can wear during the day! My favorite way to wear one is layered under a chunky knit cardigan, with army green jeans and ankle booties!

A chambray shirt will no-doubt be one of the most versatile pieces in your closet. Make sure you will invest in a shirt that will hold up through many washes, like this chambray shirt from Gap.

12. Distressed Skinny Jeans

Fall is the season to swap your cut-offs shorts for skinny jeans! And I just LOVE how sweaters look paired back to distressed skinny jeans. Something about that combo gives me all the heart eyes, especially with a wide belt thrown in the mix. Y’all know how picky I am about my distressing, so I made sure to link to distressed skinny jeans that were up to par!

Keep in mind, you’ll want your distressed skinny jeans to tuck into your boots nicely, without extra fabric bunching around the ankle. These distressed skinny jeans from Express are more like a legging, so they won’t do that. BTW, Express is my favorite place to shop for distressed jeans!

In love with the utility vest and the felt hat! Two things I could definitely see myself wearing constantly this fall.

      Hi Tristan,

Thanks for checking out the post & commenting! I actually need a utility vest myself. Fur vests can be overkill (no pun intended 😉 ) when it’s not very cold yet. I like that a utility vest isn’t as heavy & a more wearable transition piece!

      xo, Ashley
